Cleland Update

Max Cleland has made more outrageous comments about the Iraq War while defending John Murtha. Here's what he said:

Cleland, a triple amputee veteran of the Vietnam War, appearing on the "Countdown with Keith Olbermann Show," on MSNBC said that Iraq is "George Bush's Vietnam." He predicted, "History will look back on the invasion of Iraq after 9/11 as one of the greatest elements of folly in our history." He added, "Five years later, Osama bin Laden and his terrorist cadre are still on the loose." He criticized government officials for being stupid in losing their focus on capturing and killing bin Laden.

Shame on Sen. Cleland for suggesting that Iraq wasn't a worthwhile war to fight, especially considering the fact that he voted for authorizing it. Is he now willing to admit that he's complicit in this "folly"?

"And when someone like Jack Murtha says that, what do they (the administration) do? Do they go after Osama bin Laden? No, they go after Jack Murtha. And they're trying to slime him in his own hometown of Johnstown, PA," Cleland said, referring to a rally scheduled next month by an anti-Murtha veterans' group.

Speaking for the MMG crew, I can tell you that we jumped all over John Murtha for his playing judge, jury and executioner to soldiers for doing their job. Did he do it because he'd gotten a detailed briefing of the Haditha incident? No, As Leo pointed out, Gen. Hagee briefed Murtha almost a week after Murtha made his public accusations. In fact, based on what we know now, I'd be surprised if the Haditha Marines could be convicted if they're even tried.

What Sen. Cleland wants us to ignore is that Murtha threw out the Constitution, specifically its guarantees of the right to a fair trial and to due process. He'd also want us to forget that Murtha's accusations came without seeing a piece of incriminating evidence. That's why we're rallying against Murtha.

It's time to redeploy the forces from Iraq and bring home our guard and reserve to guard our borders and focus on killing or capturing Osama bin Laden and his terrorist cadre.

Speaking for myself, I'm not convinced that bin Laden isn't already dead. Why else haven't we seen anything that proves he's alive? Why didn't he appear in the video marking the 5 year anniversary of 9/11 instead of al-Zawahiri? Secondly, why should we think that killing bin Laden is still a significant step in ending the war on Islamofascism?

In response to a question from Olbermann on what Murtha would do differently in the new Congress if Democrats win a majority and Murtha heads the Defense Appropriation sub-committee, Cleland said Murtha would do three things.
"First, he'd lead an effort that I think is growing in this nation and in the Congress and hopefully in the new Congress that we've had it in Iraq. And it's time for the Iraqi citizens to take charge of their own country. It's time to withdraw our forces out of harm's way and eliminate the possibility of the veterans that are getting killed and maimed there and adding to that number. Secondly, to focus our guard and reserve on our border. "And third, to really focus on the military necessity and political necessity to put together our allies who we've dissed for five years and really focus on the center of terrorism in the world. And that's Osama bin Laden and his terrorist cadre. And kill or capture him and kill or capture them. That, you can expect from Jack Murtha."

Thank God we won't have to worry about a Murtha-led Defense Appropriation sub-committee. Thank God we won't have to deal with any of his wrong-headed policies.

DEMOCRATIC INFIGHTING

In expectation of a Democratic takeover of the House in this year's elections, advocates of Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and Rep. John Murtha are engaged in a fierce backstage battle for their candidate to become majority leader.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who would be unopposed to become speaker of a Democratic-controlled House, is considered certain to vote for Murtha against Hoyer. Murtha managed Pelosi's successful campaign for party whip against Hoyer in 2001, which provided the stepping stone toward her current dominance in the House. Hoyer associates say Pelosi is working behind the scenes for Murtha, but Hoyer told this column he sees no such activity by her.

Although both Hoyer and Murtha once were considered part of the Democratic Party's relatively moderate wing, Murtha's aggressive opposition to U.S. intervention in Iraq has made him a favorite of the left.

It is an oft-used expression to "follow the money" when baffling events in politics leads one to be confused as to their nature or causality. I believe in this case, one could also surmise, "follow the power trail" as well.

Murtha knew that in the era of Howard Dean's democrat party, he could never have been elected House majority leader by being a moderate. With the elections coming up in November, Murtha saw an opportunity for a powergrab, and desperate times called for desperate measures.

So if Murtha had to sell out his nation's military mission in Iraq and play the turncoat against what were his Marine brethren as a means of almost instantly brandishing his moonbat anti-war credentials and setting himself up to be Majority leader, so be it.

So Jack. Are the "thirty pieces of silver" you're seeking for turning against your Marine brethren worth it?

Just what other principles are you willing to sell out if you should gain the position of power you want and the status that it would bring you?

On John Kerry, Jack Murtha, and Hanoi Jane...

Henry Holzer's post over at The Conservative Voice has some interesting points, drawing some damning parallels between John Kerry, Jack Murtha and "Hanoi Jane" Fonda...

I’ve just finished reorganizing some of my Election 2004 essays. One, about John Kerry’s anti-war activities and the North Vietnamese, struck me because of how it applies today to opportunists like Jack Murtha, leftover Marxists, airhead celebrities, America haters, and virtually the entire Democratic congressional and party leadership. Here’s what Erika Holzer and I wrote two years ago:

Fox News Channel has just reported that “in his 1985 memoir about the [Vietnam] war, communist Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap wrote that if it weren’t for organizations like Kerry’s Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Hanoi would have surrendered to the United States.” This is not the first time Vietnamese communist leaders have credited the anti-War movement in the United States with bolstering the formers determination to stay the course.

In our “Aid and Comfort”: Jane Fonda in North Vietnam, we wrote that “Fonda’s trip to Hanoi sent a message not only to the American public, but to the North Vietnamese as well.” Here is an exchange between The Wall Street Journal and Col. Bui Tin, a dedicated Communist cadre for most of his life, and one of the first officers of the North Vietnamese army to enter Saigon on the day it fell.

Q: Was the American antiwar movement important to Hanoi’s victory?

A: It was essential to our strategy. Support for the war from our rear [from China] was completely secure while the American rear was vulnerable. Every day our leadership would listen to world news over the radio at 9 a.m. to follow the growth of the American antiwar movement. Visits to Hanoi by people like Jane Fonda . . . gave us confidence that we should hold on in the face of battlefield reverses. We were elated when Jane Fonda . . . said at a press conference that she was ashamed of American actions in the war and that she would struggle along with us. (Emphasis added) (Read the rest)

And this was during the Vietnam war, when instant communication, such as internet and satellite TV, was largely unavailable.

Now imagine the extent to which Jack Murtha's constant "pep talks" (sarc) regarding our soldiers' mission are in fact true pep talks to al-Qaeda and the other Islamo-fascist monsters, who by virtue of his words find the strength to get up and fight another day? Given today's age of instant communication, the words fall trippingly off of Mr. Murtha's toungue, and right onto the eyes and ears of our soldiers' (and our) enemies.

The terrorists who bomb innocent Iraqi civilians and kill and maim our soldiers have no better friend than one Congressman John. P. Murtha.

But you know, I think he just doesn't care.

But I know that PA-12's voters do.

A hero is laid to rest today...

I attended the funeral of a hero today. In terms of describing the character of Sgt. Joshua Hanson, I could pay no better tribute than that put out by the family:


The funeral, though somber and humbling, was beautiful.

The Patriot Guard Riders, at least 200 of them, were there as escorts and flag bearers..




Since there were over 700 in attendance, way too many for a procession, school buses were on hand to take mourners to the cemetary... The Patriot Guard riders were at the cemetary to greet the mourners



Joshua's comrades in arms render a 21-gun salute... and then "Taps" is played...

Right now I'm too drained to write anything profound...

Just suffice it to say, All gave some; and some gave all...

Murtha Watchdog Brethren BootMurtha With the Scoop

Boot Murtha.com has done an exemplary investigative job in their "6 o'clock news-worthy" piece posted below, anticipating Murtha and his minions' next possible strategic campaign move regarding his congressional race with Diana Irey, which up to this point he has taken for granted while basking in the glory as the new hero of the lunatic left.

It's starting to look as if he has spent more time doing the cable tv left wing talk circuit he adores so much than he should have, to the extent that now he looks over his shoulder to what suddenly appears to be a viable contender that has he and his campaign shaking a little in their boots.

Thus, he and they have now hit low gear to look for, and seem to have found some good juicy mud to sling on the worthy candidate Irey. And this mud seems to have possibly been supplied to the campaign by terrorists. Thats right, terrorists. See how below.

Boot Murtha: The Murtha Update, September 8, 2006.... read the latest on Rep. John Murtha: "Rumors are flying that Rep. John Murtha is ready to make war profiteering charges against Robert Irey – husband of Murtha's 2006 opponent, Diana Irey. Word has it the charges are based on a 'smoking gun' memo from Robert Irey's now deceased business partner, Dale Stoffel.

According to published reports [LINK] Robert Irey's company, CLI, partnered with Dale Stoffel's company, Wye Oak, and through Stoffel's efforts in Iraq acquired more than $40 million worth of government construction contracts to build a center in Taji to retrofit Soviet-era armored vehicles for Iraqi civil-defense purposes. American engineer, Joseph Wemple, was also brought into the project, which was overseen by the rebuilding task force led by U.S. Army Lt. Gen. David Petraeus.

But neither companies were paid. Stoffel returned to the US to seek help for payment through Senator (Rick Santorum) and the DOD. Stoffel returned to Iraq after being unsuccessful in acquiring payments. Five days later – Dec. 8, 2004 - Stoffel and Wemple were shot to death in Iraq.

According to a Jan. 28, 2006 AP article [LINK]: 'The killings remain unsolved. The FBI is still investigating, though family members say little has happened in the past several months. A previously unheard of insurgency group continues to post Internet videos for no apparent reason, showing documents from Stoffel's laptop computer, which was stolen in the attack."

Will Murtha Lead?

Or will he just continue whining about the Bush administration? That's essentially the question Diana Irey is asking in this press release:

"Jack Murtha says he's all for fighting the war on terror, he just doesn't think the President is doing it the right way. Well, in the coming days, Jack Murtha will have an opportunity to prove himself, he can offer his leadership, and cast his vote, in favor of giving the President the tools he needs to better prosecute that war.
"Yesterday and today, the President has taken two giant strides forward in the prosecution of the war on terror: yesterday he announced the transfer of 14 suspected terrorists from overseas CIA prisons to the U.S. Naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, and asked Congress for legislation specifically authorizing military tribunals so they can be tried properly and brought to justice; today, he asked Congress for new legislation that would specifically authorize the National Security Agency to surveil suspected terrorists abroad who are calling contacts inside the United States.
"In both cases, the President is doing the right thing to enhance American security in the face of the Islamofascist terrorist threat we face, and putting the ball squarely in the court of Congress. The only question now is, will Congress step up to the plate? Jack Murtha has already made his views known: on December 21, 2005, in an interview on CNN, he had this to say about NSA wiretapping:
"They're violating the Constitution and the laws. All they had to do is come to Congress."
"So now the President is taking Jack Murtha at his word, going to the Congress, and it's up to Jack Murtha to prove that he can live up to his promises."

It's put up or shut up time for Murtha and the Democrats. Are they just carping about President Bush's prosecution of the war for political gain? Or are they serious about fighting the terrorists with a multi-leveled, complex strategy? The next 18 legislative days will give us a clear answer.

If Murtha, Pelosi and other Democrats don't provide leadership in moving this vital legislation forward, then I hope that that would be uppermost in the minds of voters, whether they're in PA-12 or wherever they are in the U.S. We can't afford to not use everything in our arsenal in fighting global jihadists.

If Murtha votes against military tribunals and against warrantless intercepts of terrorist communications, then one thing will be obvious: Murtha MUST Go.

Murtha and Iraq--out of touch as ever...

Despite the daily advancements made by our Iraqi policy, our soldiers and their Iraqi counterparts, Jack Murtha thinks he has all the answers, and appears to think of himself as a top authority on Iraq and what should be U.S. policy. But Murtha, in his quest to proclaim defeat, has no clue as to the challenges that face the Iraqis, nor any sense of perspective of what it will take for them to cement democracy in their troubled land.

From Jackson Diehl in the Washington Post:

Mahdi, Sistani and other Shiite leaders in the government don't share Washington's perception of a downward spiral. They also don't buy the American sense of urgency -- the oft-expressed idea that the new government has only a few months to succeed. Consequently, the many ideas for silver bullets tossed around in the U.S. debate mostly don't interest them.

For the most part, our queries were politely and somewhat laconically dismissed. Iraq is not in a civil war, Mahdi said, and doesn't need more U.S. troops. It has a constitution and elected government, and thus there is no need for an international conference. As for constitutional reform, the Shiite and Kurd parties that wrote the charter last year are waiting for proposals from Sunni dissidents. Mahdi added: "So far we have heard nothing."

So what is the solution? "Time -- that is it," Mahdi replied. "A nation like Iraq needs time. The elections for a permanent government happened eight months ago. We have been in office a few weeks. The people who we have in office have never governed. These people come from oppression and a bad political system. We can't import ministers to Iraq. There will be many mistakes. The Americans made many mistakes, and Iraqis had to support that."

But Jack Murtha will have none of that:

"If we are to fight this war with the same sense of dedication and vigor as we did prior wars, we cannot do it without a surge in force.

Two years ago, I was one of only two in the House of Representatives who voted for a draft, because I believe if we are a country truly at war, the burden should be shared proportionately and fairly. So Mr. President, you have two options, either change the course in Iraq and reduce the burden on our overstretched active force or reinstitute the draft. We cannot sustain the current course."

Murtha--out of touch? out of his mind?

Perhaps both.

When you can't even get the French to agree that surrendering is a good idea, where else can you go?

PARIS - French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, one of the sharpest critics of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, warned Washington against pulling out troops without regard to regional security.

Villepin, interviewed in Paris by CNN, said a badly planned withdrawal could cause chaos in Iraq, "which of course would be disastrous for the whole region".

As Moonbattery put it this past December,

De Villepin may be a twit, but he is bright enough to say this of "timetables for withdrawal":

The real timetable is the Iraqi situation.

Okay, the French are still not exactly what a reasonable person would call allies, but whereas some people are actively campaigning for our defeat by advocating a precipitous withdrawal, de Villepin is actually being supportive by noting that now we're in the war, we can't quit until we win it.

When the French get off the fence and show more support for the USA than we are getting from some of our own politicians (e.g. Jack Murtha), you know that Vegas must be giving us very good odds of coming out on top. (Read the whole thing)

Playing Devil's Advocate

It's time to play devil's advocate to expose the emptiness of the Democrats' 'plan' to fight Islamofascism. How aften have we heard Democrats say that Iraq is a "distraction from the real war on terror"? Or that the "the real war on terror" is in Afghanistan? The information that I've gathered blows those arguments to smithereens. Let's start with Iraq.

Let's say, God forbid, that President Bush accepts John Murtha's advice to "immediately redeploy" our troops out of Iraq. Do Murtha, Pelosi, Reid and other Democrats think that (a) the Iranian mullahs will stop funneling money to Muqtada al-Sadr for the purposes of stirring up sectarian violence or that (b) Saddam's loyalists will stop craving a return to power? What happens if Saddam's loyalists take exception to the Iranian mullahs' attempts to take control of Iraq through Muqtada al-Sadr?

Isn't it predictable that the violence between Saddam's Baathists and Iran's proxies would make the current sectarian strife look mild in comparison? That's why it's of utmost importance that we stomp out the sectarian violence in Baghdad and elsewhere, not to mention training Iraqi defense forces, before we leave. Democrats know that but they're temporarily 'ignoring' that for temporary political gain. That's why Democrats' calls for leaving Iraq should scare every voter in America.

Another popular Democratic claim is that President Bush has been distracted "from the real war on terror." Considering the information in this article, isn't it impossible for Democrats to say that President Bush isn't paying attention to all potential terrorist hotspots?

CAMP LEMONIER, Djibouti -- In the fall of 2002, the U.S. military set up a task force here on the Horn of Africa to kill any al Qaeda fighters seeking refuge in the region. The base was crawling with elite special-operations teams, and an unmanned Predator plane armed with Hellfire missiles sat ready on the runway. Today, the base houses 1,800 troops whose mission is to build health clinics, wells and schools in areas where Islamic extremists are active. The idea is to ease some of the suffering that leaves the locals susceptible to the radicals' message, thus bolstering local governments, which will run the new facilities and get credit for the improvements.
Behind the shift is Gen. John Abizaid, a 55-year-old of Lebanese descent and a fluent Arabic speaker, who leads U.S. forces in the Middle East. In May, the four-star Army general visited 17 Navy Seabees, or engineers, at work designing a school. "Those 17 Seabees doing their mission out there achieve as much for us as a battalion of infantry on the ground looking for bad guys," the general said. In an interview in Iraq later, he was even blunter about the limits of U.S. firepower. "Military power can gain us time...but that is about it," he said.

Based on this information, isn't it impossible for Democrats to say with a straight face that President Bush doesn't have a plan to combat jihadists worldwide? Based on this information, it's perfectly obvious that Democrats are being intellectually dishonest when they say that.

It suggests that President Bush has a comprehensive plan for protecting America from terrorist attacks, a plan that's far more multi-leveled and complex than Democrats, with their willing accomplices in the Agenda Media, give him credit for.

By comparison, the Democrats' plan is (a) reneg on our commitment to a fledgling democracy right before they're able to defend themselves; (b) 'redeploy' half of our troops to Okinawa, the other half to Afghanistan, where "the real war" is; and (c) hope that the jihadists stop making inroads in France, the U.K., North Africa and South America.

That isn't a plan to protect us; that's a plan to guarantee future terrorist attacks on American soil; attacks that will be far more deadly than 9/11 ever was.

Let's examine the credibility of Democrats' claims that our policies in the Middle East, specifically waging war in Iraq, is creating new terrorists. How does that explain this 2001 article?

On 23 February 1998, a statement appeared in the London-based Arabic Newspaper Al-Quds al-Arabi calling on all Muslims to kill Americans. The statement, published by Osama Bin Laden and his associates, purports to be a religious ruling, or fatwa, against the "Crusaders and Jews," whether civilian or military (see Appendix). This document is part of the evidence that links the bin Laden network to the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
It is not by chance that this fatwa was first published in England, where its publication was protected by democratic rights and freedom of speech. This is only one more example of the cynical exploitation of the freedoms of Western civilization by radical Islamists for the advancement of their extremist goals, including the abolition of those very freedoms. In order to launch their Jihad against the "Infidels" of the West, the Islamists have established a kind of forward base among their enemies, operating under the protective umbrella of democracy, human rights, and freedom of speech and religion. The U.K. has thus become a safe haven for the launching of Jihad against the rest of the Western world.

The ugly truth that nobody wants to face is that bin Laden's strain of Islam isn't spreading because of American policies. Rather, it's spreading because of his ideology. If America left the Middle East; if the U.S. left Israel to fend for itself, bin Laden's ideological brothers would still keep spreading their hate-filled violence across the world because their goal is world domination.

Bin Laden's vision is similar to Nazism, communism and fascism because, just like his predecessors, bin Laden's goal is world domination, giving the world the option of slavery, proselytization or death.

Let's also suppose, for sake of this discussion, that Democrats got their way with the NSA's Terrorist Surveillance Program. What impact would that have had on international terrorists' plots? After all, we know that the TSP was used to connect the dots that helped foil the London plots to blow up 10 American airplanes over the Atlantic.

We also know that (a) Democrats rejoiced when Anna Diggs-Taylor ruled that the TSP was unconstitutional and (b) Patrick Leahy and John Conyers stepped forward immediately after that to say we should pass legislation making the TSP 'legal', this despite the fact that every prior court ruling held that warrantless intercepts and searches are constitutional.

We also know that Harry Reid bragged about killing the Patriot Act and that CAIR lobbied John Conyers, John Dingell, Nancy Pelosi and others to prevent the renewal of the Patriot Act. Considering how vital everyone thinks the Patriot Act is in connecting the dots, can we afford to have people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid setting the legislative agenda as House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader respectively?

Isn't it true that Democrats, while saying that they want to work with the President on fighting terror, are the people asking the President to jump through hoop after hoop to do his Constitutionally mandated job of protecting us from attacks? Isn't it true that, if Democrats truly wanted to fight global jihadists with the same passion as President Bush, that they wouldn't make such a fuss about the NSA surveillance program? Wouldn't they have passed the Patriot Act renewal without filibustering it?

Let's not forget that Russ Feingold said that filibustering the Patriot Act renewal was a great moment for our Constitution and our democracy and a great moment in the fight against terrorism. Hearing that, isn't it scary to think that he's likely running for the presidency?

The bottom line to this article is to point out how flawed the Democrats' 'plans', if you can call them that, are in fighting an enemy as ferocious and deadly as bin Laden's jihadists. No serious person can read this information and take Democrats seriously when it comes to fighting global jihadists.

...Insisting that current US policy "is neither working, nor making us more secure," Democratic leaders from both houses of Congress today wrote US President George W. Bush to urge the beginning of a withdrawal from Iraq, RAW STORY has learned.

House and Senate Minority Leaders Harry Reid (D-NV) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), joined by ranking members of several related committees and subcommittees have signed the call for a 4-part change of course in Iraq. The move follows up on a July 30 letter to the President, that called for a phased redeployment of U.S. troops beginning before the end of the year.

In addition to again urging the President to consider changing his Iraq policy, the new letter also urges the President to oust Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. "We do not believe," Democrats write, "the current civilian leadership at the Department of Defense is suited to implement and oversee such a change in policy."

Despite their hiding behind the "Don't call me unpatriotic!" mantra, politically motivated moves like this, coupled with the daily rantings of the senile old windbag, Jack Murtha serve to make the job of allowing free Iraqi independence and the successful prosecution of the war in Iraq all the more difficult. CENTCOM Commander Gen. John Abizaid:

... How does American public opinion affect the way you do your job, the way you prosecute the war?

I struggle with it a lot. I'm always perplexed as to why in Washington there will be such lack of confidence in some quarters. It's difficult to see the broader picture of the progress that we've made because it's slow progress, but it's steady progress. It's difficult to think of us as winning because there's so much ambient violence. Sometimes the 24/7 news cycle drives people's opinion that it's only chaos and there's no hope for victory, but that's not true. Am I discouraged by bad publicity? Sometimes. Am I worried about the outcome? If day-to-day public opinion is so driven that people lose confidence in this enterprise that we can't ultimately be successful, then we fail. (emphasis added)

And the democrat party, including one Jack P. Murtha, in their unholy, unscrupulous thirst for power, continue to do everything they can to meet that end.

Murtha's never-ending quest to declare defeat in Iraq continues...

When several military experts called for the addition of hundreds of thousands of troops early in the Iraq War, the Bush Administration rejected the call, and instead chose to fight with a minimal force. And now, when our troops have been deployed over and over again; when almost all of our combat units at our bases at home are at the lowest state of combat readiness; and with this Administration's continued insistence to stay a failed course; it is now more obvious than ever that we can not sustain this war on its current course and we must change direction.

Too bad you made that wrong turn at Okinawa, Jack.

The burden of the Iraq War has fallen squarely on our all-volunteer military and their families. They have performed remarkably well, particularly in light of the unclear and ever-changing mission dictated to them by Pentagon civilians of the Bush administration.

Not to mention the fact that they perform well despite fifth-column idiots such as yourself badmouthing their mission at every turn, and levelling unsubstantiated allegations at their fighting comrades in arms.

While the Administration stresses that we are a country at war, they refuse to spread the burden proportionately. Instead, they pursue tax incentives for the rich (WRONG), run up our federal deficit (WRONG) (Note to Murtha: National defense is a constitutionally mandated function of the federal government), and spend astronomical sums in Iraq with little or no control over wasteful and fraudulent spending. (Where's your proof, gasbag?) This is not the picture of a country at war. Consider the following:

The current war in Iraq has lasted longer than the Korean War, World War I and World War II in Europe. This war is the first protracted conflict in modern times in which our nation has not utilized a draft for additional support. If the President is genuinely serious in his comparison with communism and fascism, perhaps he should reconsider a call to reinstate the draft. The selective service provided:

10 million U.S. Servicemen in WWII,

1.5 million U.S. Servicemen in the Korean War, and

1.8 million U.S. Servicemen during the Vietnam Conflict

And we now have the best-trained, best equipped, and highest in morale military force we've ever had. Advances in technology have more than made up for fewer numbers in manpower. Murtha's stuck in the military stone age. And we're supposed to lend credibility to what he says?

The facts are that in 1950, the United States had about 1.5 million active duty personnel under arms and by 1952 they surged to 3.6 million. In Vietnam the U.S. had 2.7 million in 1964 and by 1968 we had over 3.5 million.

In 2006, the overall active end-strength of our nation's military was 1,367,500. The President's 2007 budget request reduces that end-strength to 1,332,300. This means that there is projected to be 35,200 fewer troops on our nation's active duty rolls this year as compared to last year. (ibid)

We cannot sustain the President's open-ended, vague and bankrupting war policies indefinitely. He should try less rhetoric and more action.

And just what is your "plan for action" O gasbag diviner of moronic military malfiesance? To have our troops deployed in Okinawa to wait it out? In what way, shape, manner or form, is that taking action to counter the Islamic fascist threat that we face? You say that we need to go to Okinawa or Kuwait or whatever to wait things out... and then you turn around and say we need to have a "surge" in power? For what? Waiting things out? For surrendering in Iraq?
Question to Jack Murtha: Just what is it that you've been smoking? (Inquiring pot heads want to know).

If we are to fight this war with the same sense of dedication and vigor as we did prior wars, we cannot do it without a surge in force.

Wrong again, gasbag (You have been making a career out of that, haven't you?). If we are to fight this war with the same sense of dedication and vigor as we did prior wars, we cannot do it while elected opportunistic bags of gas such as yourself continue to make our soldiers' jobs more difficult by giving aid and comfort to their enemies by declaring them incapable of winning it!

It is unlikely that the President will call for a draft. A draft is politically unpopular. But we cannot continue to allow the President to pursue open-ended and vague military missions without a change in direction.

Two years ago, I was one of only two in the House of Representatives who voted for a draft, because I believe if we are a country truly at war, the burden should be shared proportionately and fairly. So Mr. President, you have two options, either change the course in Iraq and reduce the burden on our overstretched active force or reinstitute the draft. We cannot sustain the current course.

Dang--I'm glad this complete imbecile wasn't in charge during WWII. Right now FDR is spinning in his grave so fast you could wrap him up in some wires and he'd be able to power a small city.

While Murtha Sits In Washington Spewing Al Queda Lefty Propaganda...

...his opponent, Diana Irey is out meeting the people that she will be working for day in and day out. Below is an article from a Somerset County Pa. newspaper highlighting her participation in a county fair going on there this weekend.

Imagine that, a politician that is out meeting her some of her hopeful constituents at a local event as opposed to worrying about what's going on in Iraq or elsewhere in the world. Particularly since a congressman or woman is elected for the most part to do just that, not search for lights and camera's like a moth, pretending to be the president and setting public policy regarding world affairs like her opponent John Murtha has been doing for the past year as he runs for a hopeful speaker of the house position figuring his seat in Washington is already wrapped up.

Daily American Online: "MEYERSDALE - Candidates are out pressing the flesh as the election season heats up. Republican Diana Irey took time on Aug. 24 to meet area residents at the Somerset County Fair.

Although the fair took place outside the district she hopes to represent by unseating U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, it was an opportunity to make her presence felt in Somerset County, she said. State Rep. Bob Bastian, R-Somerset, joined Irey for the walk-around.

“I'm getting her familiar with some of the Somerset people,” he said as they wandered through the bright lights of the rides and darker corners of the livestock pens.

Bastian has been busy helping out many of the Republican candidates as the mood of the voter seems to have changed in recent months.

“This has been an anti-incumbent year,” he said."

Gee, any guesses why that might be happening in this district in PA?

The small group ran into a number of people and Irey often talked at length
with fairgoers, some who were not even old enough to vote.

Shelby Baird, 14, of Somerset was excited to meet the candidate. The young girl is the founder of Teen-age Republicans of Somerset, or TARS, as
she called it.

Raised in a conservative Republican family, she hopes to work on the Irey
campaign as it progresses locally.

As for the candidate herself, Baird was surprised by the personal attention.
“She seems a lot quieter than the person she's running against,” she said. read more

Pretty observant coming from a 14 year old! Even she knows that John Murtha's mouth has been running way too much, particularly since he first leveled his accusations against our soldiers in Haditha. We remember those words....if you don't they kinda went like this:

It's much worse than reported in Time magazine. There was no fire fight. There was no IED that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood. And that's what the report is going to tell.

Now, you can imagine the impact this is going to have on those troops for the rest of their lives and for the United States in our war and our effort in trying to win the hearts and minds.(ref)

Thanks again John.. not... I can only imagine what effect your comments might have or have had on our brave innocent until proven guilty soldiers who are doing such a great job there and in Afghanistan. It still remains to be seen as to what effect it will have on your life in Washington and back home in PA, you remember where that is don't you, or have you forgotten why they sent you there?

With any luck you will soon be able to spend alot more time there, at your home in Pennsylvania that is, once Diana Irey unseats your fat traitorous ass from congress.

Murtha still not learning the lessons of history...

Yesterday, at the Huffington Post, John Murtha spoke once again...

It's the usual crap. The only reason for you to read it is to become further outraged over his behavior. According to recent Democrat talking points, Bush and Rumsfeld are hypocrites, attempting to spin the war over mere partisanship politicals. Murtha tried to imply that both men said that

"...many still have not learned history lessons,

war in Iraq designed only to provoke unreasonable fear in the
hearts of Americans."

Well, in the sense that murtha *tried* to say it, he didn't prove it. He just said it and expects you to believe it because he said it. Kinda like Olberman did the other day. Besides, if by now you haven't understood that the Muslim Majority Nations aren't trying to kill you, let alone scare
you, you're too frigging stupid to live, let alone know enough to be afraid. Put a gun to your head and pull the trigger, it'll be much easier than the life and/or death that you face from the bloody hands of Islam.

Mr. Murtha also accused Mr. Bush of ignoring history. That is a typical talking point of socialists, communists (and of Islam) world-wide. According to socialists and democrat leftists, America is an Imperial power practicing colonialism--something that you are just supposed to believe, merely because they say so.

Actually, a close look at history will show that things are quite the other way around. If communist China didn't practice colonialism, they would've left Nepal alone and they wouldn't want to conquer Taiwan. If Islam wasn't practicing colonialism, they wouldn't force Shiara Law upon every nation where they are a majority. If socialists weren't colonialists, they wouldn't use politics and coercion and force as means to implement socialism on the populace of many and several nations.

As with many on the left today, they always accuse others of the very things that they practice themselves. But if you're stupid or essentially uneducated, you wouldn't know that. That's called history. Get some.

For the perennially stupid among you, move along. There's nothing to see here.

If you listen to the recent speeches by ol' "GW" and "Rummy," and especially if you read the transcripts, nothing could be further from the truth than what the Democrats are accusing them of doing. Along other things, the speeches of Mr. Bush and Rumsfeld pointed out the parallels between history and the present situation as regards Islam. They also point out several other things that you didn't hear from the media.

You see, the Democrats and the media - and Mr. Murtha especially - want you to believe that Mr. Bush and Mr. Rumsfeld said the exact opposite of what they said..

Because if you believe the truth, and believe what you've seen and heard with your own eyes and ears, you'll then know them for the lairs that they really all are--a prospect they can ill afford as they set their sights toward November.

..and who wants to elect proven liars and self-professed enemies of America to office?

Leo adds: Another historical fact that Murtha appears to overlook ad nauseum is the fact that his Surrender first! rhetoric has served (and continues to serve) to embolden our enemies, resulting in the deaths of more and more Americans.

And speaking of history, I wonder if Congressman Murtha has bothered to bone up on his study of the life and times of Benedict Arnold?

In Memoriam

A Dent man and a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard now serving in Iraq was killed by an improvised explosive device Thursday.

Staff Sgt. Joshua Hanson, 27, was one of four soldiers patrolling in a Humvee when the incident occurred.

Hanson was a member of 2nd Platoon, Alpha Company of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, and was assigned to the Detroit Lakes Armory. He was the team leader of the 3rd Squad.

Lt. Col. Paul Zimmerman, deputy commander of the 1/34th and speaking by telephone from Iraq to a hastily called press conference at the Detroit Lakes Armory Friday, praised Hanson as one of combat team’s best soldiers.

Lt. Col. Kevin Gutknecht, the 1/34th’s rear detachment commander, said funeral arrangements were pending.

According to Zimmerman, Hanson was killed instantly by the blast at around noon Iraq time (3 a.m. Minnesota time). Three other members of Alpha Company were in the Humvee with him and were able to get out with only minor injuries.

The heavily armored vehicle soon caught fire, and two of the soldiers tried to pull Hanson’s body from it, but were unable because of the fire. They suffered second- and third-degree burns on portions of their bodies.

Eventually, a commanding officer ordered the soldiers away from the Humvee because ammunition inside the vehicle was exploding due to the fire.

Four other soldiers were wounded during that incident, plus two more Alpha Company members by indirect mortar fire during a separate incident. Zimmerman said all eight soldiers were treated for their injuries and have returned to light duty.

Alpha Company is stationed at Camp Taqqudum, a U.S. Marines logistics base. The camp is in Al-Anbar Province and 65 miles west of Baghdad. The sector has long been a hot spot for insurgent activity, particularly at two cities, Ramidi and Fallujah.

The 1/34th is under tactical command of the U.S. Marines at Camp Taqqudum. Zimmerman said 1/34th soldiers and U.S. marines were jointly participating in a four-day offensive in the Ramidi area, with the intent of either capturing or killing insurgents.

“The offensive was going very well …. the Minnesota boys and marines were doing very well,” said Zimmerman.

Hanson’s platoon was on patrol when his vehicle struck the IED.

“It is a great tragedy for the Hanson family and I would like to express our condolences to them,” added Zimmerman.

The Hanson family issued a written statement through the Minnesota Army National Guard.

“Josh was a wonderful and loving son and a great friend. He was proud to serve his country as duty called. We can’t express how proud we are that he was willing to lay down his life for all of us.

“He and his comrades are real heroes. The United States of America is what it is today because of soldiers like Josh and those who have gone before him. Our solace is in knowing that Josh died doing what he felt he needed to do. God bless America, the land that Josh loved.”

In another prepared statement, Major General Larry Shellito, adjutant General of Minnesota, said, “It’s our priority to assist the Hanson family during this difficult time. I ask that all Minnesotans take time to reflect in a moment of silence to honor this young hero.”

Hanson, who graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1998 and was single, joined the Minnesota Army National Guard 10 years ago. He last spoke to his family a week ago.

Hanson had recently finished a portion of studies related to law enforcement at Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

This was Hanson’s second overseas deployment with the Minnesota Army National Guard. He was part of the 2nd Battalion 136th Infantry that spent a year (2003-04) in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“Hanson was a good soldier and he took care of his men,” praised Gutknecht. “He had a dry wit, but he had the knack to take tense situations and make them better.”

Hanson was a member of my son's platoon; my son was around 150 feet behind him when the IED detonated. Despite the best efforts on the part of his comrades, some of them sustaining second and third degree burns in their efforts, Hanson was burned alive.

I spoke with him earlier today, and Doug said, "We lost the funniest guy in our platoon when he stepped on an IED in July. Now we've lost our second-funniest guy."

Doug is understandably shaken, but he's back on patrol for the first time since the incident today.

GOD keep him, and GOD bless and keep Sgt. Hanson's family and friends, and his comrades who are still fighting the good fight in Iraq, who continue to know what is at stake.

Prayers will certainly be appreciated.

Last week’s town hall meeting at the Park Slope United Methodist Church, 410 6th Avenue, concerning the war in Iraq drew a packed house to weigh in on one of the country’s most pressing issues.

The meeting was part of Rep. John Murtha’s (D-Pa) swing through the borough to endorse Yvette Clarke for the 11th Congressional district race.

Murtha is considered the foremost Democratic authority and opponent on the war in Iraq and held the meeting along with Rep. Anthony Weiner and Clarke.

“I feel very strongly the military has done everything it can do and that the military commanders agree with me,” said Murtha.

OK, Congressman blowhard. Where is the list of the military commanders that "agree with you?"

Where's the list, assclown?

I'm calling you out, gasbag.

On behalf of Sgt. Hanson, my son, and those who continue to bravely put their lives on the line for their mission, I politely say,

Who's the Hero? Who's the Villain?

The Marine Times has a great article up about Sgt. Frank Wuterich's actions in leading the 3/1 Marines in Haditha. It's must reading if you (a) want the truth about Haditha or (b) if you don't trust John Murtha's account of Haditha.

The leader of an infantry squad led his men through 150 patrols that uncovered weapons caches and roadside bombs, detained more than 50 suspected insurgents and led a counterattack when his squad was fatally ambushed. So his platoon leader, commending his confident and competent leadership, nominated the sergeant in January for a combat award. But then-Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich isn’t just another small-unit leader put up to receive the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat “V” for heroics in the Iraq war zone.

When Murtha first went ballistic about Haditha, he said "Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood." It's difficult for me to picture a leader who had "led his men through 150 patrols that uncovered weapons caches and roadside bombs, detained more than 50 suspected insurgents and led a counterattack when his squad was fatally ambushed" "overreacted because of the pressure on them." The two images just don't fit together, not in my wildest imagination.

A "summary of action" noted his aggressive leadership through four months operating in Haditha and the nearby city of Hit that teemed with insurgent fighters. It describes the Nov. 19 incident during a mounted patrol as "a complex ambush that was initiated by an [improvised explosive device] and followed by automatic weapons fire."
"The squad then came under automatic weapons fire from both sides of the road," the summary states. "While under automatic weapons fire from two directions, Sergeant Wuterich aggressively directed his squad to provide security for the casualties in the kill zone by coordinating suppressive fires against the enemy. When the [quick reaction force] arrived, [he] ensured that the three casualties were safely evacuated and then led a counterattack against the enemy, south of the road."

Murtha's account isn't credible in the face of this official report filed, not by Sgt. Wuterich, but by his commander. The fact that the battalion approved the medal and submitted it to the 1st Marine Division says unequivocally that Murtha has a credibility problem. It really says that Sgt. Wuterich and his troops are genuine heroes.

The people of PA-12 need to ask themselves if they want truth-challenged John Murtha representing them in Congress or if they'd prefer having Diana Irey, a woman who would honor the great sacrifices and accomplishments of these Marines, representing them.

It's an easy choice, one that will become obvious this November.

9/11 Still Fresh in Shanksville Five Years Later

That message came through loud and clear when I read this article in the Tribune-Democrat. One of the things that these young voices tell me is that 9/11 will have a major impact on Pennsylvania politics. Check out the intensity in these statements:

• "The community really grew together," said sophomore Jacob Frazier. Walker remembers the building shake, a loud noise and a smoky cloud rise from a nearby field following the crash of Flight 93.
• On Sept. 11, 2001, Kaitelynn Walker was in her sixth-grade gym class. "We immediately began to panic," she said. Parents began filtering into the school to take their children home. "Just seeing (my mother’s) face and the seriousness of her expression, I knew something was wrong," said Walker, a junior. "That hit me really hard and I knew it was real."
• Baker said it took her three years to go to the temporary memorial. "It took me a while to go to the crash site," she said. "The emotions hit you when you go up there. I thought I’d be OK with it."

These kids were deeply affected by the crash that blue-skyed September morning. I can't imagine it hasn't had a similar effect on their parents. The reason why I say that this will impact Pennsylvania politics is because of the emotions in the nation the night of the attacks. I'd imagine that the emotions that we felt in the heartland were but a tenth of the emotions felt in Shanksville.

Shanksville is only 15 miles south of Johnstown, PA, Murtha's home. How much does anyone bet that the people of southwest Pennsylvania feel an intensity about terrorism and the Iraq war? Does anyone think that Murtha's talking ill of the Marines and the military will play well in a district where terrorism's memories are still this fresh, this raw?

The Irey team is doing a great job of exposing Murtha as playing politics with terrorism and Iraq. The obvious seriousness of the people of Shanksville and PA-12 tell me that Murtha's made a fatal mistake by politicizing the issue.

Read those quotes and tell me otherwise. I dare you.

How Arrogant And Stupid Is The Murtha Campaign?

"Who's running this campaign?" -- Jim Quinn, September 1, 2006

If you live in southwestern Pennsylvania, you know that some of the best media coverage of the 12th district campaign can be heard on the Quinn and Rose morning show. (For those outside of the area, the show is syndicated on several Clear Channel stations in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and is also available to XM radio subscribers on channel 185.) Co-host Rose Tennant has known Diana Irey for years, and Jim Quinn is a strong supporter as well.

Some weeks back, Quinn reported on the air, John Murtha's people were considering buying advertising time on the flagship station, WPGB. They began having second thoughts after learning that Quinn regularly criticizes Murtha on the air. "Clueless" isn't the word. Quinn has been hated by Pittsburgh-area left since he turned from disc jockey to talk show host in 1993. He has been syndicated in places like Murtha's Johnstown for almost three years now. And yet, Murtha operatives are just learning who Quinn is and what he stands for.

Well, the campaign has made its decision. As Quinn told us this morning, the Murtha camp will not be purchasing any advertising time on any of Clear Channel's six Pittsburgh area stations because of the morning hosts' opposition to Murtha and what he has come to stand for. WPGB is the only one of the six stations that focuses on political talk. The other stations' formats include sports, classic rock, oldies, adult contemporary, and alternative rock. Plenty of potential Murtha supporters could be reached by advertising on those stations. But no -- the Murtha campaign has to have a hissy fit about one host who broadcasts for three hours in the morning, five days a week. They are taking their ball and going to play in another neighborhood.

How does Quinn feel? He's flattered. Quinn's network covers a significant portion of Murtha's district. The Dems could buy air time and run Murtha ads to (as Quinn put it) "get in your face". Instead, they are "punishing" the network by withholding their advertising dollars. Radio, Quinn pointed out, is a business. Revenue comes from advertising money, and a radio host does not go out of his way to lose money for his employer.

By the same token, Quinn's show is political in nature, and he can't change his tone. He makes money for his employer by expressing his opinions on the air. People tune in and support the show's sponsors because of Quinn. The network will not suffer one bit from the absence of Murtha ads and the income that they would bring in.

How about advertising for free? Quinn would welcome Murtha on as a guest. The campaign wouldn't have to pay a cent. (Don't hold your breath waiting for Murtha to accept that offer.)

So Murtha -- or, more likely, the people running his campaign -- feels threatened by an old disc jockey who gets up for work while most of us will still be sound asleep for hours. This, as Quinn said, is good news for Diana Irey. It is an example of "shooting oneself in the foot".

John Murtha has been without serious opposition for so long that he has forgotten how to reach voters. If he doesn't want to go out of his way to reach potential supporters, why vote for him?

Who's Confused?

Diana Irey's campaign team is putting out information that's backing John Murtha into a corner, even if he doesn't seem to notice it. Here's the latest example:

"Yesterday, responding to remarks by the Secretary of Defense, Jack Murtha said, 'If there is a moral and intellectual confusion about this war, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is the one that is confused.'

"This, from a man who proved his own intellectual AND moral confusion when he said he wanted Israel immediately to lay down its arms and stop defending itself against attacks by Hezbollah, a terrorist organization responsible for the murders of more Americans than any terrorist organization other than al Qaeda.

Murtha hectoring people about moral and intellectual confusion is a joke. After making what now appear to be false accusations against the Haditha Marines, he's the last person that should talk about moral confusion. The truth is that he's so full of...uh...himself that he's become a parody. Most observant people think that he's a travesty. He has only himself to blame.

Murtha likely wouldn't have had trouble getting elected had he not shot his mouth off like he's done since just before Thanksgiving. His endless spate of lies is becoming his anchor, an anchor that will ultimately lead to his demise.
