Murtha and ABSCAM--the untold story...

From an Irey newsletter:
"Today I offer reason number 18 Jack Murtha doesn't want to debate me: because HE DOESN'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW THAT HIS 'INVESTMENT DEFENSE' WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A RUSE TO HIDE HIS $50,000 CASH BRIBE FROM AN UNDERCOVER AGENT FOR THE FBI.

"Check it out for yourself -- go watch the FBI ABSCAM surveillance video of Jack Murtha explaining to FBI undercover agent Tony Amoroso about his need for a 'business commitment' in the district so he could cover up his acceptance of a $50,000 cash bribe:

"'A business commitment that makes it imperative for me to help him. Just, let me tell you something. I'm sure if -- and there's a lot of things I've done up here, with environmental regulations, with all kinds of waivers of laws and regulations. If it weren't for being in the district, people would say . "Well that [expletive deleted], I'm gonna tell you something . This guy is, uh, you know, on the take." Well once they say that, what happens? Then they start going around looking for the [expletive deleted] money. So I want to avoid that by having some tie to the district. That's all. That's the secret to the whole thing.'"

"'That's the secret to the whole thing.' Investment not for the sake of investment, but because 'that's the secret' to how you can take a bribe and get away with it.
Yes, Murtha states that he was only looking for "investment" in his district when dealing with the faux Arabs in the video (linked on our sidebar). But as I have intimated time and time again on this blog, and as the above-passage clearly shows, Murtha was trying to figure a way to take a bribe without getting caught.

So it's no wonder that when the League of Women Voters and Pennsylvania's newspapers, including Murtha's home town newspaper, call for a Murtha-Irey debate, Jack Murtha employs his only viable strategy:

"Cut n run!!"
